Senior Services' Health University wins top award

(June 2008, Marietta, GA) The National Association of Counties (NACo) has presented Cobb Senior Services with the 2008 NACo Achievement Award for Health University-Cobb. The award recognizes effective and innovative programs which contribute to and enhance county governments in the United States.

Since cardiovascular disease is the single largest killer of men and women in the United States, Cobb Senior Services partnered with the Atlanta Regional Commission, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Lockheed Martin and WellStar Health System to create Health University-Cobb. The program provided a variety of free education and disease management tools over a 16-month period. Participants were shown how to understand their condition and the consequences that may occur if it is not managed properly; how to implement and follow diet and exercise regimens; how to realize the importance of complying with the therapy regimen as instructed by their healthcare provider; and how to educate family and friends for greater support.

At the initial screening in March 2007, 398 seniors of the more than 500 tested qualified for enrollment based on at least one significant risk factor of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or unhealthy body mass index scores. A second screening was conducted after six months. The scores from the second testing showed that 71 percent of the seniors reached their goals. Significantly, those seniors most at risk showed the most success. Among the 114 seniors who maintained a log of physical activity, and thus received points for incentives, 79 percent reached their goal.

Overall attendance at Health University-Cobb totaled 3,104 for the sessions offered from March 2007 through June 2008. Graduation ceremonies will take place on July 30 which will not only reward the participants for all their hard work, but will provide an opportunity to inspire them to continue in their good habits.

Pamela Breeden, director of CSS, said “This has truly been a team effort on the part of all the partners and the seniors. We are very excited to receive this honor. Cobb is truly a great place to retire!” Cobb Senior Services will be formally recognized at NACo’s annual conference July 13 in Kansas City.
